Solihull Soroptimist Plans start to Blossom!
Club members were delighted to be joined by family, friends and members of Solihull Council in Dorridge Park on 11th November. They were in the “Soroptimist International Centenary Wood” and everyone was busy planting bulbs to add colour to the wood in springtime.
How may bulbs were planted?
A massive 750 bulbs were planted! 250 daffodils and 500 bluebells. Daffodils and bluebells were especially chosen as their colours, yellow and blue are those of Soroptomist International. All the bulbs were generously donated by Solihull Council.
Working in Partnership with Solihull Council and Touchwood Shopping Centre
Both Solihull Council and Touchwood Shopping Centre in Solihull are partners in this project with us. The 14 busy gardeners from Solihull Club were delighted to be joined not only by family and friends but also Councillor Ian Courts, Leader of Solihull Council. Jo Ann Williams and Shameena Villars also got dug in! Jo Ann and Shameena are from the Solihull Council Environmental Services department.
Councillor Ian Courts managed to find time to join us during his busy Armistice Day schedule.
Where is the Centenary Wood?
The wood which is called “Soroptimist International Centenary Wood” is in Dorridge Park. It has paths in the shape of a cross, with the trees being planted 2 metres apart to allow for growth. When was the Wood Officially Opened?
The Wood was officially opened on 9th December 2021. It was opened by the Mayor of Solihull Councillor Ken Meeson, whose ward is Dorridge. He was joined by Councillor Ian Courts, Leader of the Council and Councillor Karen Grinsell, Deputy Leader of the Council. The Solihull Soroptimist Club President, President Margaret Lloyd, and members of the Club were there as well. You can watch a video of the official opening HERE
Our commitment is to provide Tree Wardens to check on the woodland. We will advise the Council if any trees die or get damaged. The Council will then come along and repair any damage. Eight members of the Club have volunteered to be Tree Wardens.
